Seasoning Beans

What are seasoning beans?

Seasoning beans are lower-value green coffees - like old samples or past-crop stock - that you use to break in a new roaster. The idea is to coat the inside of the drum with coffee oils before roasting anything high quality. It helps improve consistency and avoids wasting good coffee during setup.

How do I season my roaster?

Roast 5 batches at around 50–75% capacity, taking each one about a minute into second crack. This builds up a layer of coffee oils on the drum.
If you're using a fluid bed roaster, you don’t need full seasoning - just run a couple of roasts to clear out any dust or residue from manufacturing.
