What is the San Roque coffee varietal?
San Roque, also known as San Roque Kenia or simply Kenia, is a natural mutation of the Kenyan SL-28 variety. The mutation was first identified in Costa Rica and has since spread to producers across the country.
Like SL-28, San Roque is prized for its cup quality. It tends to show bright fruit acidity and layered complexity, often with flavour notes reminiscent of cola. This makes it an attractive choice for producers and roasters seeking vibrant and distinctive profiles, while still building on the heritage of one of Kenya’s most celebrated varieties.
