What is a polytunnel (in coffee production)?
A polytunnel is a greenhouse-like structure made from metal frames covered in plastic sheeting, used to protect coffee during drying. It helps control temperature, airflow, and exposure to rain or intense sun. By creating a more stable environment, polytunnels reduce the risk of mould and allow producers to dry coffee more evenly and predictably.
In many regions, especially those with unpredictable weather, polytunnels give producers more control over drying times and help maintain quality. They’re often used alongside raised beds, with ventilation designed into the sides to keep airflow consistent.
